Identifying a working model to promote inclusion of gender and sexual diversity in schools
Author : Christa Beyers
Abstract :While current research emphasizes the emotive nature of teaching gender and sexuality, limited research can be found identifying a working model within which to promote the acceptance and inclusion of all learners with alternative gender and sexual orientations who were previously excluded. This presentation aims to explore such a model based on Cultural Intelligence to promote the active, as opposed to reactive, nature of teaching gender and sexuality. The components of Cultural Intelligence: knowledge, mindfulness and behaviour are extended to classroom practise to establish a framework which aligns with the active change of modern sexualities. These components are proposed to form a model through which successful teaching takes place and allows for acceptance and understanding instead of advocating knowledge which is incompatible within diverse societies.
