Sustainable Tourism Practices And Critical Regionalism: A Case Study Of Recreation And Resort Projects In Nigeria

Author : Abdulwahab Engworo Etudaiye

Abstract :This research investigates the intersection of sustainable tourism practices and critical regionalism within the context of recreation and resort projects in Nigeria. As the tourism industry increasingly recognizes the imperative of sustainability, there is a growing need to understand how local contexts influence the implementation and effectiveness of sustainable tourism initiatives. This study employs a qualitative case study approach, focusing on several recreation and resort projects across diverse regions of Nigeria. By employing critical regionalism as a theoretical framework, this research examines how local cultural, social, economic, and environmental factors intersect with global sustainability standards and practices. Through in-depth interviews, document analysis, and site observations, this study explored the challenges and opportunities in integrating sustainable practices within the Nigerian tourism industry. Additionally, it examined the role of stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector entities, local communities, and tourists, in shaping sustainable tourism development. The findings of this research contribute to both theoretical understanding and practical insights into sustainable tourism practices in Nigeria, offering recommendations for policymakers, industry practitioners, and communities to foster more sustainable and culturally sensitive tourism development.
