Validity and Reliability of a Writing Content Assessment for Early Grades

Author : Jeanne Gunther

Abstract :A rubric for measuring writing content in early grades was developed (and development documented) by Gunther and Flowers (2023). This tool was greatly needed as benchmark testing of writing has schools with hundreds of compositions by early writers in need of scoring. The validity and reliability of this tool was initially explored, and reliability was undetermined as only the original researchers were conducting scoring. The current work provides evidence for reliability with classroom teachers now implementing the rubric. Implications for use of the rubric outside of benchmark testing are given.

Keywords :Writing, early grades, teacher feedback.
