Effective Integration of Artificial Intelligence in Classrooms: A Compelling Priority for English at the Higher Educational Institutions in 21st Century India

Abstract :Artificial intelligence (AI) rules the educational landscape of the world. It has the potential to perform the essential operations of our education system and to determine the profile of educational institutions regarding their quality and ranking. It offers substantial support to the teaching and learning process. Since the English language has special significance in the process of teaching and learning in the current education system, it continues to be a dominant medium of instruction in classrooms at higher education institutions in India. At the same time, the National Education Policy 2020 suggests reforms in India’s education system and talks about promoting and preserving linguistic diversity. It thus emphasises the use of the mother tongue or vernacular as the medium of primary education. It implies that these students may not develop the necessary competencies in English language and literature studies. ‘The Digital India Campaign’, launched in 2015 by the Government of India, envisions making India “a digitally empowered society” and “knowledge economy”. As English is one of the most used languages for jobs and international connectivity, the proper integration of AI tools in the classrooms as a part of English Higher education will have a tremendous impact on enhancing students’ learning outcomes, thus getting them ready for future challenges. Therefore, this paper focuses on the effective integration of AI in classrooms at the higher level as a compelling priority for English education in 21st century India.
