The Perceptions of Nurses on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Nursing Practice: A Qualitative Study
Author : Mirna Fawaz
Abstract : Background: Artificial Intelligence (AI) can improve competency, accuracy, and quality of care in nursing practice, improving workload and allowing nurses to concentrate more on patient care and decision making. Aim: The aim of this research was to explore the perceptions of Lebanese nurses on the use of artificial intelligence in nursing practice. A qualitative descriptive research design informed by descriptive phenomenology was employed. Methods: Semi-structed interviews were carried out among 17 nurse’s workers at three different hospitals in Beirut. Inductive thematic analysis was conducted over the period of 2 months. Results: The inductive thematic analysis generated three main themes and six subthemes. The first theme was titled, “Collaboration and workflow enhancement” followed by another theme titled, “Human-tech balance” which included “Training and skill development” and “Enhanced team cooperation” as subthemes. The third theme was titled “Risks of AI integration” focusing on the risk of losing the human aspect of nursing as well as patient safety and privacy. The final theme was titled, “Obstacles to AI Integration” which highlighted the lack of training and challenges of resource allocation. As the field of nursing adapts alongside other healthcare professions to AI, it will be essential to strike a balance between integrating the benefits that AI has to offer while preserving the emotional and relational human-centered calling that is foundational to caring and nursing. Conclusion: The nurses displayed an attitude and hopefulness acknowledging AIs potential to improve outcomes and make operational processes more efficient
