Advantages and disadvantages of using generative AI for creating online courses material at university level, a Latin American perspective
Author : UNIVERSIDAD AUTONOMA DE QUERETARO
Abstract : A recurring topic about the use of generative AI in education is the ethics of students using it for assignments, a less discussed topic is the teachers using it for planning or grading assignments, which could also fall into the ethics discussion. But how about using it to create course material? In a rapidly evolving world, course material can feel outdated to students who are used to seeing new content every day. Even if the material is updated regularly, one year can make a lot of difference for them. This is especially true for online courses, in which the teacher-student interaction can be limited and teachers must rely on the material posted on the platform to engage with the students. For the following paper we analyzed the creating capabilities of some of the most popular generative AI models, for different courses taught at the Universidad Autonoma de Queretaro, in one of the online degrees it offers, the opinion on the ease of use, end result and perceived usefulness was gathered from teachers, as well as the opinion of some students in the perceived quality and usefulness of the course material. It was found that while the initial ease of use was high and the end result appeared satisfactory at first glance, mistakes were often found and the fine tuning process was very time consuming. The students had mixed reactions, some found the course material useful, but others were turned off by the appearance or some mistakes found on the course material presented.
