Linguistic Eye and Artistic Eye---Their Origin and Evolution

Author : Dr. Kurumi Saito

Abstract :Eye study usually falls into (1) ophthalmological and/or neurological study on eye for looking at something, (2) psychological study on eye for gazing and joint attention, and (3) physiological study on unconscious emotional eye (eg. narrowing eyes when disgusted). However, there are also (4) linguistic eye and (5) eye in the arts. Eye in sign language can be bound morphemes or free morphemes, and they are rule-bound (hardly different between individual signers), which researchers other than sign linguists seldom know. On the other hand, there are 36 eyes in Natyasastra, the ancient Sanskrit encyclopedic treatise on the arts, which have not been addressed by researchers in eye studies. The purpose of this study is to prove a new hypothesis, that is, linguistic eye and artistic eye both originated from eye for looking at something, and to elucidate the process by which human eye have evolved from eye to see to eye to show.
