Students' perception of mobbing in schools in Latgale region

Author : Aira Gribonika - Upeniece

Abstract :The aim of this study is to understand students' views on the prevalence of mobbing in schools in the Latgale region, focusing on its emotional, social and pedagogical aspects. The theoretical part of the study analyses the explanations of the concept of mobbing and its social and psychological consequences, based on the works of Latvian and international researchers. In the practical part, a quantitative survey was conducted with the participation of 100 Latgale pupils, identifying the manifestations of mobbing, the most frequent causes and pupils' reactions to conflicts in the school environment. The results show that mobbing in Latgale schools is mainly manifested as emotional abuse, such as name-calling, talking and social isolation. 27% of the surveyed pupils say they have been victims of mobbing in the last year, while 40% say they have observed mobbing against others. Pupils often confide in parents and friends, but are less likely to seek help from teachers or school support staff. Significant gaps are found in schools' ability to identify and prevent mobbing situations at an early stage. The results of the study point to the need to develop more effective anti-bullying programmes, improve teacher training in conflict management and promote students' socio-emotional skills. It recommends closer cooperation between parents, teachers and educational institutions to ensure a safer and more inclusive school environment.
