The Hidden Giants Of East Kent! Incidental Musculoskeletal Findings In A District General Hospital In The UK

Author : Dr. Sophie West

Abstract :Incidental findings are not an uncommon occurrence in radiology. The royal college of radiology quote up to 30% in body imaging. Most are relatively benign and have minimal impact for the patient. A classic example in musculoskeletal radiology is the benign haemangioma in the spine. However in the last 6 months in our institution we have had a flurry of cases where the incidental finding is anything but small and has had a significant impact. This is a case series illustrating these incidental giants such as a large chondrosarcoma of the pelvis in a young patient presenting with a gynaecological issue, extensive thoracic bony sclerosis in a patient with undiagnosed SAPHO and TB of the ankle in a patient following a fall! This is just a flavour of the cases which will involve a review of the imaging and discussion of the pathology and the imaging findings from a UK district general hospital perspective.

Keywords :Incidental, chondrosarcoma, SAPHO.
