Urban design as a catalyst for revitalizing the riverfront development

Abstract : A vital role has been played by riverfront areas throughout history in determining physical, social, economic, and cultural development. However, environmental deterioration, haphazard urban development, enchantments, and restrictions over accessibility have made adverse effects on the relationship of urban areas and watercourses, which results in ecological imbalance, pollution, heavy traffic, inadequate amenities, and inefficient use of public space. This circumstance requires balancing riverfront revitalization with urban development. In order to create a liveable and community-friendly riverfront, this study will look at riverfront revitalization from the perspective of urban planning. The study looks at important planning parameters such as land use, accessibility, public open spaces, public realm, green-blue infrastructure, environmental management, flood control, conservation of cultural heritage, and socio-economic growth. Through a variety of interventions, including promenades, plazas, activity corridors, roadways, and waterfront developments, urban design can be seen in this context as a spatial tool or catalyst that achieves planning principles. This research is built upon a literature review, pillars of riverfront planning, and an analysis of diverse riverfront development cases. Analysing riverfront revitalization projects will highlight spatial strategies and other planning elements for the study process. Therefore, rather than just improving aesthetic appeal, a more comprehensive approach is required to solve the issues of riverfront rehabilitation. The link between cities and their rivers can be greatly enhanced by urban design frameworks that support socio cultural aspects, accessibility, amenity, and urban growth.
