The Influence of ChatGPT on Writing Style and Language Use in Educational Settings

Author : Sara Al Shehri

Abstract :This study investigates the sociolinguistic effect of ChatGPT on students’ writing fluency, language choice, and perceptions of academic standards in learning environments. In the quantitative research, data was collected using online structured questionnaires where 100 students were selected from elementary, middle, and high schools. Incorporated in the survey were questions that asked about the number of times the participants used ChatGPT, the perceived advantages of using it to enhance writing performance, and the disadvantages of using it in the same pursuit. The research demonstrates that the use of ChatGPT leads to a much better correspondence with the language standards, cohesion and lexical richness in students’ writing. However, it brings limitations on reliance on the program and effectively demoralizes creativity, especially in concerns of creating write-ups such as essays. High school students showed the most comprehensive and intense usage, with 82% of them indicating the use had enhanced writing efficiency, and 67% using ChatGPT to revise their outputs. Yet, 36 % of students expressed a negative attitude towards its output templates since it does not allow creativity. In the study’s closing statement, the authors concur that while ChatGPT has enormous educational potential, its implementation is best done to provide adequate technological assistance while simultaneously steering development away from a total reliance on automated language tools.
