Designing the Future: How Student Participation Shapes Curriculum for Emerging Digital Tools

Author : Justin Thoreau Lund, Matthew Hoogestraat

Abstract : As emerging digital tools such as virtual reality (VR) and AI-driven platforms reshape design education, traditional curriculum models are increasingly strained by the need to support flexible, participatory learning. This paper examines how these technologies function as stress tests for curriculum, exposing limitations in linear sequencing, outcome-based assessment, and conventional studio critique. Using two VR-based design studio courses as case studies, the research investigates how curriculum can adapt to support exploratory learning, embodied experience, and student co-discovery in digitally mediated environments. The study employs an iterative, co-designed pedagogical approach in which students actively contribute feedback that informs course structure, sequencing, and assessment in real time. Students from earlier course iterations return to support subsequent cohorts, demonstrating techniques and sharing insights, enabling peer-to-peer learning and sustained engagement beyond a single term. Rather than positioning VR as a singular innovation, the paper situates it within a broader category of emerging tools that destabilize fixed expertise and predefined outcomes. Analysis identifies four recurring areas of curricular pressure: sequencing and skill progression, cognitive load and embodied constraints, assessment alignment, and distributed expertise. In response, the paper proposes a pedagogy of uncertainty that emphasizes instructor facilitation, iterative curriculum development, and student feedback as a core design input
