Navigating the Ethical Intersection of Artificial Intelligence in Legal Education

Abstract : Artificial Intelligence (AI), defined as the combination of data, algorithms, and computational power, is quickly transforming the landscape of legal education. Its potential lies in personalized learning paths, better assessment systems, and increased administrative efficiency. However, these opportunities come with urgent ethical and regulatory challenges. This presentation explores the ethical responsibilities of AI integration in legal education, highlighting the need to protect justice, human dignity, and academic integrity while advancing innovation. The paper, authored by Dr. Salex E. Alibogha of the Philippines, argues that responsible innovation requires comprehensive ethical frameworks that anticipate risks while enabling progress. Key vulnerabilities are systematically examined, including algorithmic bias that could reinforce inequities in student evaluation, the necessity of robust data privacy and security protocols, and the fundamental need for transparency and explainability in AI- driven decisions. These vulnerabilities highlight the responsibility of legal educators to ensure that AI applications adhere to the principles of proportionality and “Do No Harm,” stay within legitimate boundaries, and undergo continuous risk assessment. Grounding these ethical mandates within global governance efforts, the presentation highlights the Philippines’ adoption of the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of AI (2021), which places human rights at the core of all AI regulatory frameworks. It also emphasizes the nation’s commitment to the Bletchley Declaration (2023), which focuses on fairness, accountability, and appropriate human oversight, especially in dealing with AI’s ability to produce deceptive content. These international commitments show how national policies can align with global standards to protect dignity and justice while encouraging technological innovation in legal education. The discussion calls on stakeholders in legal education to act. It emphasizes that responsible AI integration should extend beyond technical compliance to actively reduce bias, protect student agency, and establish clear accountability measures. For law schools, this involves incorporating ethical AI literacy into curricula, so future lawyers learn to critically assess algorithmic decision making and its effects on justice. Faculty development programs must also prepare teachers with the skills to responsibly integrate AI, making sure technology enhances rather than harms academic fairness and professional growth. Ultimately, the presentation emphasizes that the ethical intersection of AI in legal education is not just a minor concern but a major challenge of our era. By framing AI within principles of justice, human dignity, and safety, stakeholders can strike a balance between innovation and responsibility.
