Cultural Consciousness in the Poetry of Rabindranath Tagore

Author : Banpreet Kour

Abstract : This research paper explores the concept of culture through the poetry of Rabindranath Tagore and highlights the importance of studying his work within the framework of cultural studies. Tagore, a renowned poet from Bengal and a Nobel laureate, provides profound insights into culture, identity, and human experience through his poetic expressions. By analysing Tagore’s poetry through the lens of cultural studies, this paper seeks to examine the relationship between literature, society, and cultural discourse. A close reading of Tagore’s themes, imagery, and poetic techniques reveals how his poetry reflects, questions, and critiques the cultural norms, values, and ideologies of his time. The study also demonstrates that Tagore’s poetic legacy continues to influence contemporary cultural studies by encouraging critical discussions on culture, identity, and human expression. Through his poetry, Rabindranath Tagore helped awaken cultural awareness by promoting unity, education, and strong human values beyond colonial influence.
