Heidegger’s Contribu on to Environmental Philosophy in Building, Dwelling, Thinking
Author : Diana Paula Fuhr
Abstract :The aim of this article is to show several contributions to environmental philosophy found in Heidegger’s text Building, Dwelling, Thinking, a conference that took place in 1951 in Darmstadt. Although his thought precedes contemporary ecological movements, Heidegger’s philosophy offers important perspectives and shares certain elements with some ecological approaches. In this work, we focus particularly on the concept of dwelling in relation to building in order to understand, on one hand, the relationship between human beings, nature, artifacts and technics, and on the other, the significance of the fourfold in this context. Drawing on the classification of environmental philosophy, which divide the main approaches into ecocentrism, biocentrism and anthropocentrism- we will examine Heidegger’s contribution to each trend as well as some possible problematic issues. Although the primary focus will be Building, Dwelling, Thinking, some references will also be made to Being and Time (1927) and The Question Concerning Technology (1954).
