The Strategic Potential of Publishing ESG information in Strengthening the Competitiveness of the Wood-Based Sector

Abstract :The growing importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in global supply chains increases the pressure on forestry and wood-processing companies to demonstrate transparent and responsible practices. In Slovakia, where the wood-processing sector plays a key role in the bioeconomy and sustainable forest management, ESG communication increasingly shapes the competitive position of enterprises. This article examines how ESG reporting and communication serve as sources of comparative advantage, focusing on material topics such as sustainable timber sourcing, certification, carbon footprint reduction, circularity, and occupational safety. Special attention is given to digitalization and technological innovation automated reporting, and intelligent monitoring that enhance ESG effectiveness. The findings show that high-quality ESG reporting positively influences the competitiveness of Slovak wood-processing companies. The study was prepared within the framework of project no.
