The Role of Inherited Cultural Identity and Technology in Shaping Personal Identity and Future Expectation of Chinese Indonesian

Author : Samuel Gasperius

Abstract :This study explores how the cultural identity of Chinese Indonesian students imparted by their family, especially parents, and technology shapes their future expectations, particularly worldview. Although identity and worldview formation were much simpler in the past, ease of access to information via the rapidly developing technology, including social media, has changed how the younger generations form their own identity and how they see the world. Through digging deeper into the layers that formed the cultural values of Chinese Indonesians from past literatures, this study will try to bridge the gaps between the students and their parents starting from a deep dive into their understanding via semi structured interviews that consist of open ended questions. While the focus is only one culture group, the most optimal participants are chosen from the options available, so the findings should provide insights of what might also be happening in other culture groups, especially because all culture groups that have access to technology, particularly social media via the internet, should all be in the same boat given the shared biological workings. Hopefully this study can provide anyone concerned with the issue a map to navigate this global phenomenon for the current era and the era that is yet to come.
