Analysis of English Hard News Story Writing of English Major Students: A Systemic Functional Linguistics Perspective

Abstract :This study presents an analysis of generic structures and metafunctions of English hard news story writing of students majoring in English, who enrolled in the course of English for Journalism at Faculty of Liberal Arts and Science, Kasetsart University, Kamphaeng Saen Campus, Thailand, in the 2020 academic year from the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics. Findings of the analysis indicate that students can construct typical generic structures of hard news stories and their news stories in an effective way through a modeling process and the language of journalism. The study suggests some guideline for English writing teachers to promote students’ writing ability through journalistic literacy development which involves a future career in mass media contexts.
