Abstract :This study aims to describe the implementation of basic seafarer training at the Barombong Shipping Polytechnic and analyze the impact of training on improving the skills of participants, as well as the challenges faced in its implementation. The method used in this study is in-depth interviews with lecturers, training participants, and direct observation of the implementation of training. The findings of the study show that the basic training of seafarers at the Barombong Shipping Polytechnic prioritizes a practical and applied approach, where most of the training time is spent on hands-on practice such as ship control simulations, the use of navigation tools, and internship experience on ships. This has proven to be effective in improving participants' technical skills, as well as preparing them to face challenges in the world of work. However, the implementation of the training is also faced with challenges such as limited adequate simulation facilities, limited training time, and an insufficient number of internship ships for all participants. Nonetheless, this competency-based training has a positive impact on the development of non-technical skills, especially in terms of communication and cooperation on board, which is especially important in emergency situations. These findings also show that training conducted in accordance with international standards, such as those regulated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), can produce seafarers who are not only proficient in theory, but also ready and skilled in practice. Overall, the basic seafarer training at the Barombong Shipping Polytechnic succeeded in preparing participants to face the dynamic and challenging world of maritime work. This study recommends improving training facilities, increasing training time, and integrating modern technology to increase the effectiveness of training in the future.
