Food Education on Dairy in English - Development and Implementation of CLIL Video Teaching Materials

Author : Matsuzaki Carreira, Masuda Shiori, Machiko Kobori

Abstract :This study aimed to develop and implement video-based CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) teaching materials for dairy-related food education in English. It focused on enabling children and parents to communicate, think critically, and learn together. The study addressed three research questions: whether children could understand the content, learn English vocabulary, and engage with the lessons. Five lesson plans and videos were created, covering topics such as “Learning About Milk,” “What Is Made from Milk?” and “Making Ice Cream.” Eight elementary school students participated in five Zoom lessons taught by a former English teacher. Pre- and post-lesson surveys included Can-Do tests, ARCS motivation model evaluations, and free-response questionnaires. Initially, engagement was low, but it improved with quizzes and games. Lessons on health and TPR activities like making butter and ice cream received high ratings. The children showed vocabulary improvement, engaged with the content, and enjoyed learning with their parents, fostering communication and interest in dairy food education through interactive online lessons.
