Regional Factors in the Competitiveness of the Export Manufacturing Industry in the Northern Border of Mexico

Author : Blanca Rosa GarciaRivera

Abstract :The competitiveness of export manufacturing companies depends largely on the efficiency of their supply chains and the influence of regional conditions. In the Northern Border of Baja California, Mexico firms operate under complex dynamics, facing challenges such as logistics costs, customs regulations, and infrastructure limitations, all of which affect supply chain performance and global competitiveness. Problem statement: Although the Northern Border is one of Mexico’s most important export manufacturing hubs, there is limited empirical research on how regional factors and supply chain practices interact to determine competitiveness. Objective: This study analyzes the impact of regional factors on the competitiveness of export manufacturing firms. Hypothesis: It is proposed that regional factors are positively associated with competitiveness. Methodology: A quantitative, exploratory, and cross-sectional design was implemented. Data were collected through 100 surveys applied to managers and supervisors of IMMEX-registered companies and analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) with SmartPLS. Results and relevance: The findings confirm the hypotheses, revealing that regional logistics are the most significant predictors of competitiveness. This study contributes new empirical evidence from a strategic border region, providing insights for both business strategies and public policies aimed at strengthening industrial competitiveness
