Digital Tools and Smart Campuses: Enhancing Education for Sustainable Development

Abstract :With the rapid development of information technology, digital tools and the construction of smart campuses have become important driving forces for promoting education for sustainable development. A smart campus is not only a key manifestation of the modernization of campus management but also an essential pathway to achieving the educational goals set out in the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This paper, focusing on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), integrates theoretical and practical studies from China and abroad on digital transformation and smart campus construction, exploring the value and potential challenges of applying digital tools in higher education institutions. The findings indicate that building smart campuses can optimize the allocation of teaching resources, improve management efficiency, and, through big data analysis, cloud computing platforms, and digital archive management, provide students with personalized learning pathways and offer teachers precise instructional support, thereby advancing both equity and quality in education. At the same time, the development of digital tools and smart campuses faces problems such as inconsistent technical standards, data security risks, and insufficient digital literacy among teachers and students. By comparing relevant cases and literature at home and abroad, this paper proposes a framework that integrates smart campuses with sustainable education, emphasizing the need to strengthen policy guidance, improve institutional support, and enhance teacher training and student engagement. The conclusions of this study hold practical significance for university administrators, policymakers, and practitioners of smart campus construction, offering a reference pathway for achieving the goals of educational modernization and sustainable development.
