Author : Mohamad Maulana Magiman, Fauziah Abu Bakar
Abstract :Despite the presence of purity regulations in various cultures throughout history and the observed similarities between different cultural purity systems, the field of comparative religion has not yet formulated advanced theories regarding the concept of purity. Indigenous cultural groups in Sarawak engage in ongoing ritual practices. The rituals and practices were developed by the Sarawak cultural and ethnic groups through performing arts for various ceremonies. These practices have a significant impact on government policies, advancements, and religious beliefs. The primary goal of all symbolic rituals is to unveil purity. The community's purity rituals serve as a guide to seeking blessings and protection from a higher power against disasters and catastrophes. This study focuses on analyzing the significance of symbols used in the rituals of indigenous ethnic groups in Sarawak. The data was gathered through detailed interviews, video recordings, and photographs of practitioners. The traditions of each indigenous ethnic group remain preserved through their consistent practice. These practices are essential for the overall health of the community and society. It is crucial to document these ethnic rituals to safeguard and maintain their cultural significance.
