Management and outcomes of rib fractures in the UK: a national service evaluation (MORF-UK)

Abstract :A service evaluation assessing the UK wide practice and variation in the management, and outcomes of adult patients admitted to hospital with radiologically confirmed rib fractures. Aim: To evaluate processes of care for patients presenting with rib fractures at a national level, and to identify clinical outcomes associated with rib fractures Methods: Data was collected over a 2 month period of all rib fractures that came in via ED, and that met the eligibility criteria. We further subdivided data based on some of the following, the below is not an exhaustive list • Time of arrival at ED • Number of days before hospital presentation that the injury occurred • Age • Gender • Mode of arrival at ED • Whether or not the STUMBL score was calculated for each patient • Whether or not the Clinical Frailty Score was calculated for each patient (if >65) • Usual place of residence and level of dependence • Mechanism of injury • Co-morbidities • Pain team / OT /PT involvement • HFNO requirement • Complications • Duration of stay Exclusion criteria: 1. Patients <16 years old 2. Patients with no radiological evidence of rib fractures
