The Role of Mathematics Textbooks in Developing Global Citizenship Values In Saudi Arabia

Abstract :This paper investigates the influence of mathematics textbooks on the development of global citizenship values among students, arguing that mathematics education transcends mere numerical skills by fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and ethical reasoning essential for global citizens. It employs both qualitative and quantitative approaches to analyze various mathematics textbooks across different educational systems, utilizing surveys and focus groups with educators and students to assess perceptions of citizenship values in mathematics. The findings reveal that textbooks that incorporate real-world problems, cultural contexts, and collaborative projects enhance students’ understanding of global issues, with the integration of case studies reflecting social justice, sustainability, and community involvement proving particularly effective. The discussion highlights the role of mathematics as a vehicle for promoting global citizenship, suggesting practical revisions to textbook content and emphasizing the importance of critical mathematical thinking as a foundation for informed global citizens. Future efforts should concentrate on curriculum design that integrates global citizenship into mathematics education, alongside training for teachers and the development of culturally relevant and inclusive resources.
