Global Insights on Chatgpt: Student Experiences Across Academic Disciplines in Higher Education

Abstract :The introduction of ChatGPT in November 2022 marked a significant moment for AI in higher education. Its user-friendly interface and ability to engage in natural language conversations quickly made it popular among students, generating both excitement and skepticism among educators. While initial research has explored ChatGPT's potential, it largely focuses on the teacher’s perspective and lacks robust empirical evidence, particularly regarding students across different academic disciplines. This paper addresses this gap by analyzing student perceptions of ChatGPT across various fields of study, using descriptive statistics and ANOVA on a sample of 23,218 students. The results show that ChatGPT is widely used for tasks like creative writing and technical assistance, with usage patterns varying by discipline. Ethical concerns, particularly around academic integrity and misinformation, are prominent. Despite these issues, students report that ChatGPT enhances learning by providing personalized support and fostering skill development. These findings are crucial for policymakers and educators seeking to integrate ChatGPT responsibly into higher education, ensuring it meets diverse student needs.
