Author : Dolapo Z. Olupayimo, Esther O. Olupayimo
Abstract :The Teaching-Learning process is essentially a series of psychological episodes which is better mastered through the application of the right language. Many teachers teaches without their students grasping anything because of the medium of communicating the knowledge. Learning takes place only when the language of conveyance is mutually understandable to both the teacher and the leaner. However, the reverse is the case in most African countries where the English language is the only legitimate language of knowledge conveyance in schools. The present study is an attempt to construct a bridge across the boundaries of ignorance as we teach through the local and native languages to pass education through the psychological barriers by using the appropriate conveyance tools of indigenous languages. The study adopts both qualitative and quantitative method of data gathering and analysis. The study uses the Yoruba language, one of the languages spoken in Southern Nigeria. Two subjects were randomly chosen, History and Business Education because of their versatility. The blended method of teaching is adopted for the study where a combination of Lecture, Demonstration and Computer Aided strategies were used to deliver the lessons in indigenous language. Finding revealed that students learnt better when the language of communication is quite understandable. The study recommends that indigenous languages makes learning easier and faster
