The Use of Artificial Intelligence in Teaching English: Reality and Challenges

Abstract :The overall popularity of artificial intelligence (AI) and different tools of AI is rising in the educational f ield with the wide use of intelligent teaching systems. With countless speaking tools of AI as well as apps, English teaching is witnessing a rapid change in methods and approaches. AI’s use expanded among learners to become an inevitable reality. The Algerian context is no exception. Henceforth, the current paper attempts to account for the viability of using AI in the teaching of English as an innovative approach. It endeavours to explore the following question: “Is AI a blessing or a curse?” To equate with the aforementioned query, an exploratory research design has been deployed wherein f ifty (50) teachers’ and fifty (50) Students’ questionnaires have been adminsitered. Results indicate that the excessive use of AI among learners has debilitated learners’ capacities despite the benefits it offers to stand as a double edged tool. Thus, its use by teachers requires both wisdom and special training to cope with the newely devised AI methodologies
