Using MS Copilot to help teaching Statistics
Author : Li-Fei Huang
Abstract :Statistics is still an important fundamental course in AI era. Meanwhile, Statistics is difficult to learn for most college students. Therefore, Microsoft Copilot will be applied to help teaching Statistics course in this paper. Copilot is a convenient AI tool of natural conversation based on ChatGPT. Students can easily access Copilot through the tool bar of a computer with Windows 11 operation system, or through the Copilot icon of an Edge browser, or through the website of Copilot on other browsers. Copilot can not only solve problems of Statistics, but also design questions of Statistics quickly. Although it’s fast to get solutions from Copilot, students will be asked to type the solving process step by step in discussion areas of moodle platform. Some Statistics problems involve three dimensional graphs. In order to draw 3D graphs, Copilot will be asked to show Python programming codes or to present results in Geogebra website. The teaching effects will be evaluated by comparing the first quiz or the last quiz and the midterm or the final score for this AI supporting college course. Finally, a survey will be made to see how students like AI tool in a traditional mathematics course.
