The Old Man and the Sea: A Manual of Biblical Teaching and Preaching
Author : Theodore Sourav Palma
Abstract :This study examines the ways in which biblical teaching and preaching are reflected in Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea. The title may symbolize the stories of the fish Jesus caught in the Galilean Ocean and the fishermen who choose his followers. Literature and religion have deep roots in fundamental forces and foundations that appeal to human emotions and senses throughout all times and all ages. Religious stories have an impact on literature, and texts reflect religious teaching and preaching in employing allegory and symbolism. Santiago's promises throughout the novella, such as going on pilgrimage, saying the Rosary, and keeping a fast, contain Christian symbolism, allusion, and references. Finally, I will discuss the biblical concept of neighbour, the canonical connection between master and disciple, and the fundamental Christian virtues of love, hope, empathy and resilience portrayed in The Old Man and the Sea.
