Renewable Realities: Organisational Changes to Tackle End-of-Life Waste in India Energy Sector

Abstract :This paper examines the organisational challenges and strategic opportunities in managing end-of-life (EoL) waste within India’s rapidly expanding renewable energy sector. Through qualitative research using semi-structured interviews, the study investigates how Independent Power Producers (IPPs) can effectively tackle the growing EoL waste challenge. Using a leading Indian renewable energy company (code-named “ALPHA”) as the primary case, the research explores current sustainability practices, analyses global best practices, and evaluates strategic opportunities for sustainable waste management. The findings reveal significant barriers to change, including financial constraints, regulatory uncertainty, and organisational inertia. Drawing on established frameworks of organisational change and sustainability transitions, the study proposes a comprehensive approach to implementing effective EoL waste management practices. The paper concludes with actionable recommendations across short-, medium-, and long-term horizons, contributing to both scholarly understanding and practitioner knowledge of sustainable energy transitions. These insights are particularly relevant for emerging markets that must balance rapid renewable energy expansion with environmental sustainability.
