Author : Sapna Sherawat
Abstract :Diasporic literature often explores the struggles of individuals navigating dual identities that belong to both their homeland and the host land. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s works offer a profound lens into this condition, particularly through the recurring themes of rootlessness, identity crisis, cultural crisis and alienation. Among the prominent voices in this domain is Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, an Indian-American writer whose works delve into the nuanced experiences of immigrants, particularly women, in navigating life between two worlds. This study examines the recurring motifs of rootlessness and alienation in Divakaruni’s f iction, highlighting how these themes influence the lives and identities of her characters. Additionally, this study will discuss how her narrative style and story-writing techniques have evolved over the years, reflecting her experience. While Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s works have received considerable critical attention for portraying immigrant life, there remains a lack of focused analysis on the themes of rootlessness and alienation. These emotional and psychological dimensions are crucial to understanding the depth of her characters’ experiences. This research seeks to address this gap by offering a thematic exploration of how Divakaruni represents alienation and dislocation in her fiction and how the characters experience cultural & and heroic elements in her work through this cultural and identity crisis
