Baseball Statistics for the classroom!

Author : Steve Krevisky

Abstract :Baseball is a rich area for using mathematics and statistics to analyze players and teams. Baseball is also an international game, with leagues in many parts of the world! In this proposed presentation, I will discuss some important statistics, such as Batting Average for batters, On-Base Average, Slugging Average, Home Run percent, and others. For pitchers, there is Earned Run Average, Walks + Hits per innings pitched (WHIP), Winning percentage and others. The home park can favor the hitter or the pitcher, and I will discuss that. I will also discuss specific statistics of special players, such as Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, and others. I like to use this in the math and statistics classes which I teach, at Middlesex Community College in Middletown, Connecticut, USA
