Meeting the Challenge of Global California Initiative: Chinese Bilingual Teacher Education

Abstract :The Global California 2030 initiative has the goal of vastly expanding the number of bilingual students. The serious lack of credentialed Chinese bilingual teachers presents schools and school districts with a challenge. This presentation will demonstrate how a Chinese bilingual teacher education program supports preservice teachers develop Chinese language and literacy, knowledge, and skills needed to teach in Chinese dual language programs. Exposure to Chinese children’s literature helps preservice teachers develop their Chinese language and literacy. Learning Chinese through children’s literature, steering away from the traditional boring Chinese instruction, excited preservice teachers. Utilizing multimedia enriched the very limited Chinese resource and stimulates interest in Chinese as a second or heritage language. Successful cases of how these teacher candidates applied what they learned in their own classrooms will be presented
