Unpacking the Complexities of Poverty in South Africa's Previously Marginalized Communities: A Feminist Perspective

Author : Dr. Nompumelelo Zondi

Abstract :Poverty in South Africa is a multifaceted issue, deeply entrenched in the country’s history of apartheid and colonialism. The situation further demonstrates the legacy of systemic marginalisation that has perpetuated intergenerational poverty, with previously marginalised communities inheriting limited access to resources, education and economic opportunities. This paper seeks to unpack the complexities of poverty in these communities through a feminist lens, focusing specifically on the experiences of black women and drawing on literature that highlights the intersection of gender, race and class. This desktop study draws on existing literature and narratives, critically analysing the intersection of gender, race and class, in the context of poverty. By examining the historical and contemporary dynamics of poverty, this paper argues that addressing poverty in previously marginalised communities requires a feminist approach that acknowledges the ongoing impact of marginalisation. Through a critical review of existing research and narratives, this study offers insights into the complexities of poverty reduction and sustainable development, with a focus on promoting gender equality and social justice.
