Role of Women in Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House

Author : Wafa Yousef Alkhatib

Abstract :Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll's House (1879) is a play that explores the complexities of gender, marriage, and individual freedom in Victorian society. In that time women were often seen as subordinate to men, Ibsen’s work challenged these conventions, offering a critique of societal expectations placed on women. The play focuses on Nora Helmer, a woman who, over the course of the narrative, undergoes a dramatic transformation that reveals the limitations of her role in society. This study wants to examine the role of women in A Doll's House, to clarify how Ibsen uses his female characters to explore themes of self-empowerment, societal oppression, and the desire for personal independence. Feminist analysis would reveal how female characters are portrayed in comparison to their male counterparts

Keywords :Henrik Ibsen, A Doll's House, feminism, gender roles, women's empowerment, patriarchy, Victorian society, Nora Helmer, societal norms, individual freedom.
