Determination of Sustainable Fishing Methods for the Mud Shrimp (Upogebia pusilla) Used in Recreational Fishing in the Gulf of Izmir
Author : Altan Okumuş
Abstract :Angling is a recreational and commercial activity widely practiced by a large number of people on all Turkish coasts and inland waters. The most important factor in the success of angling is bait. Crustacean, arthropod or mollusc organisms are used in angling. These organisms are collected from their natural habitats and preserved alive and used as bait in angling. Until today, the most preferred baits such as razor shell, mud shrimp and worms have been hunted from their natural habitats in an uncontrolled manner with methods that harm nature, and both the population of the species and the ecological environment have been damaged. Since Izmir Bay is a reserve area where these creatures used as bait are densely distributed, this area is exploited by illegal, irregular and unconscious hunters. We wanted to conduct a study on bait fishing in Izmir Bay with the hope of preventing the number of bad examples where illegal hunting in a region can only be stopped by the population of the target species in that region
