Evaluation of the Effect of licorice paste on oral ulcers' healing in rats: An animal study
Author : SeyedMehdi Ziaei
Abstract :The oral cavity represents the health. The oral mucosa is susceptible to ulcers. Oral ulcers are caused by various factors. Since there is no definite treatment for oral ulcers, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of licorice paste on the healing of oral ulcers. 36 male rats were assigned to the control and intervention groups. A mucosal wound was created in the buccal mucosa of 36 rats. In the control group, a placebo was used, and in the intervention group, licorice paste was used. The wound size was measured on days 4, 8, and 12, and finally, on the 12th day, after taking samples from the wounds, the rats were sacrificed, and the samples were stained for histological examination. T-test was used for statistical analysis. The best results regarding reducing wound sizes on days 4, 8, and 12, as well as the degree of regeneration of the epithelium, were more evident in the intervention group than the control group. Also, the fibroblast counts in the intervention group were lower than in the control group. Licorice paste exhibited healing properties on oral ulcers in rats. Covering oral ulcers with a licorice paste can facilitate and accelerate the wound-healing process.
