Impact of Urbanization on Dairy Farming and Sustainable Rural Development in Peri -Urban Area in India: A case Study of Aligarh City

Abstract :Urban population has been steadily increasing and demand for agricultural products especially food products are also enhancing in response to urban expansion. Perishable products like vegetables and dairy products are found to be supplied from urban surrounding areas. Milk is the largest urban demand as food nutritive intake and it exerted a heavy pressure in peri urban area for dairy production, Dairy farming is one of diversified and specialized farming system which has been practiced all over world and as an auxiliary activity to cropping in India since antiquity. Dairy farming provides opportunities for employment and income generation and a tool of poverty alleviation in rural India. Increasing urbanization, improvement in disposable income, awakening for health and nutritive food intake have resulted in greater demand for milk and milk derived products recently. Keeping in consideration the significance of dairy farming, author has selected Aligarh City and its peri urban areas for understanding rends and development of dairy farming in response to expansion in urban population. Efforts are also made to understand socio- economic profile of dairy farmers as well as of beneficiaries of different natures. Data are collected through both Primary and secondary sources. Peri urban zone is different concentric on the basis of 5 kms distance interval, starting from Centre point of the city. Two villages from each zone have been sampled for detailed survey. GIS &RS techniques are used for mapping the urban influence on dairy farming in different buffer zones from Centre of Aligarh City. Study revealed that urbanization and urban population showed positive impact on dairy farming. Distance decay mechanism is also operated. Increase in income, livelihood as well as sustainable rural development are also achieved through such development rural economy. Marketing network, infrastructural facilities like refrigerated transport, processing units at accessible distance and deficiency of extension service are important challenges in dairy farming development in the study area .
